Chair, Cathy Trevaldwyn.
Hello, my name is Cathy Trevaldwyn. The first thing people ask me is ‘Where does your second come from?” It’s a Welsh place name with one of letters changed to make sound Cornish. Welsh speaking patients will know there is no ‘v’ in Welsh!
The next thing they ask is ‘How do you say it? Divide it into 3 syllables Trev/al(l)d/wyn.
I moved to Chelmsford 40 years ago, to take up the new post at Great Baddow ‘Comp’. now High School, My aim was to make it ‘more comprehensive’ and provide a unit for partially hearing and deaf children were able to take in school life.
After 15 years I was forced to resign because of a bipolar episode. I took the opportunity to study art, a subject which I had dropped when 13 yrs. 9 years later I had a degree in `art and design’. Being busy and doing something which me satisfaction keeps me well. 9 mosaics of mine around mental health facilities North Essex – mostly wards for patients with dementia.I am also an examiner and interviewer for Essex University OT Courses.
We all need some personal therapy: along with being a mosaicist I am learning to do printing ‘properly’!
Why am I passionate about the ‘patient experience t we receive so wanted become Chair? My background is in mental health as I have bipolar. and have been hospitalised many times. Mental Health is much more advanced in encouraging patients to be involved (or participate) in how care is delivered. Although my focus has been on mental health provision I have learnt a great deal attending meetings such as the CCG about Primary Health Care over the years.
I learnt about PPGs when being asked to talk about mental health at another surgery. To me this is the essence of a PPG . PPG’s should be having events which not only inform in themselves but also provide opportunities when the PPG members can talk to patients and find out what matters to them. The PPG may be small but we are here to listen and provide a link with Virgin Care. We are very much critical friends. Criticism is more likely to be acted upon if there is a framework or a good relationship, recognising that by ‘helping’ we also understand better the difficulties the practice faces.
Member, Veronica Sadowsky.
My name is Veronica Sadowsky and I have been a patient here at Sutherland Lodge surgery since 1984 when I moved to the Old Moulsham area and stayed when I moved to Great Baddow in 1999.
The surgery has seen me through many stages of healthcare from pregnancy, young mum of 3 children to now having wellness checks for ‘older’ patients!
I have had an interest in Health and Social Care for many years and my involvement includes being a member of the Community Health Council in the 1990’s and a Non-Executive Director at the then Essex Ambulance Service NHS Trust for 4 years.
I have worked with unpaid family carers for over 10 years, both for Essex County Council and for charities working in this field. I spent 5 years working at Broomfield Hospital as a Carers Liaison Worker and also worked with GP surgeries in South-East Essex.
Currently I am the Essex Service Manager for CarersFIRST which is commissioned by Essex County Council to support carers aged 18 and over all across Essex.
I am a passionate believer in the NHS but recognise there are lots of challenges to meet and a need to look at different ways of working including better links between Primary Care, Mental Health and Acute Hospitals whilst recognising that we can’t lose sight of the personal relationship between GP and Surgery staff and their patients.
I joined the Patient Participation Group in early 2018 because it’s important for us all to be involved at whatever level we can in order to influence the future of the services that we and our families all use. Small local changes can ultimately bring about a big difference and the more patient voices are heard, the better!
Member, Jenny Turner.
I have been a patient at Sutherland Lodge Surgery for over 40 years since moving to Chelmsford. I am married with four children and so the practice has looked after all the family, including my elderly parents, at different times throughout the years.
I work as a secretary/PA in Great Baddow and also run Essex Heartbeat a support group for patients with heart rhythm problems, pacemakers and implantable cardiac devices or ICDs. I am very interested in patient care in the NHS and so also being a keen supporter of the community I am a member of the Patient Participation Group.
The practice has been facing a difficult period but progress has been made and plans are in place for continuing improvement. I believe that patient participation can help to provide a greater understanding between patient and GP of the difficulties that are sometimes encountered in running a busy practice, thereby benefiting both parties.
Member, John Cameron-McIntosh.
My name is John Cameron-McIntosh, my family and I have been a patient of Sutherland Lodge surgery since 2013.
Our family has been supported by the surgery throughout the last six years including the birth of our wonderful son.
I got involved with the PPG to find out more about what I could do to support the surgery. I wanted to learn more about the NHS and how, as group, we can constantly find ways to improve patient experience at Sutherland Lodge.
As part of my day job I’m a Wellbeing Champion and Mental Health First Aider. I’m really passionate about wellbeing support at work, at home and within the surgery.
Alongside the other members of the group I care deeply about the surgery and the NHS. It’s important all patients participate, in anyway they can, to improve our surgery. Why not got involved?
To become involved in either the PPG or the virtual group, please contact either the practice on 01245 351351 and ask to speak to the practice manager, or email firstname.lastname@example.org
